Set in Monterrey, Mexico, Ya no estoy aqui movie (I’m no longer here) speaks about the story of a group of local kids.
They follow the counter-culture of Kolombia, a lifestyle that consists of dancing and listening to “cumbia rebajada” (slow cumbia). The members dress in bright baggy clothes and sport homemade, eccentric hairdos.
Ya No Estoy Aquí offers an honest look into an unknown part of Mexico, exploring the impact of culture on identity and the Mexican diaspora.
Details
The main character is forced to leave his town and move to NY. Due to documentation issues, he becomes an irregular and slowly starts to loose his strong identity.
Mexico is a strongly Catholic country and La Virgen de Guadalupe is the most celebrated Saint.
The colour palette of the artwork is inspired by Mexican
religious imagery.
The concept revolves around the fact that Governments and society “idolise” ID documents. Not being able to own a document, can change people’s lives dramatically as it does happen in the movie.
In the artwork, the documents are placed inside the Virgen de Guadalupe’s beam to reinforce this idea.
I used polymer clay because, not only the main characters of the movie are kids, but also because it is a medium that one uses to play at a young age.
This is to highlight the fact that the most affected by these situations are kids and young adults.
The guns represent the violence that is often present within these dynamics and exacerbate these already extreme situations.
